Sugar Glider: the |
Dr. Janine M. Cianciolo, DVMHi folks. Arnold the glider here, the handsome one in the upper left corner of this page. Meet my vet. I can't ever pronounce her last name right, so she said, "Call me Dr. C." So I do. And so does everybody else! She is awesome and I love her. She's also going to be writing about sugar glider care for the GliderVet newsletter! All of us at SunCoast Sugar Gliders are grateful to Dr. C. for always being there when we need her. One of her best attributes is that she will actually come to us, so we don't have to sit in a cold, sterile lobby waiting on a doctor to tend to our needs. Dr. C. says that the best way to diagnose exotic animals like us is to see us in the habitat that our humans keep us in. Many problems that develop with exotic pets are caused by our humans not keeping us in the right environment or feeding us right. Dr. C. makes sure that doesn't happen. Here's more about Dr. C., my (our) vet: Janine M. Cianciolo, DVM received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University - College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. While there, she was awarded the Kaytee Avian and Special Species Excellence Award, for demonstrated excellence in exotic medicine. Dr. C. dedicates her practice primarily to the care of exotics and wildlife. She certainly sees a number of cats and dogs in her practice, but is best known for her care of unusual animals. Dr. C.'s experiences and achievements are far reaching. While an undergraduate, Dr. C was a part-time dolphin trainer at King's Island in Ohio. She completed her preceptorship at the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium. Post- graduate work included a year long internship in exotic animal medicine with a well known Florida veterinarian, Dr. Theresa Lightfoot. Dr. C. participated in a Guatemalan project to return animals to their natural habitat after these animals were confiscated from illegal wildlife traders. Some of the animals rehabilitated were spider monkeys, howler monkeys, various types of parrots and macaws, jaguars, ocelots, margays, jaguarundis, kinkajous, Morlets crocodile, boas and iguanas. Several of these animals are on the endangered species list. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. C. and other people like her, these animals will continue to prosper, hopefully for many years to come. Volunteer work is also part of Dr. C.'s endeavors. She is a volunteer participant in a green sea turtle study off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. This study is funded by the Wildlife Conservation Society and conducted by graduate students from the University of Florida. She is part of a corps that helps teach natives about other food supplies so they don't wipe out the green turtle population. These services are all performed pro bono, as she is committed and devoted to the care of all animals in need. Dr. C. is also the designated veterinarian for Boyd Hill Nature Park of the St. Petersburg's Parks Department. She is primarily responsible for the care and treatment of sick and injured wildlife, and personally handles relocation responsibilities when relocation is in the best interest of the wildlife. When not busy caring for animals, Dr. C. and husband Joe participate in many outdoor activities including, but not limited to, teaching SCUBA. Dr. C. is also a licensed boat captain. And best of all, she is our very own USDA certified vet in charge of two Florida based exotic breeding facilities. She handles all the needs for SunCoast Sugar Gliders and another local breeder that raises wallabies. Thanks, Dr. C.! We are all so glad that you are on our team!
