Does SunCoast Ship Sugar Gliders and is it Safe?

Yes - We Ship.

These are three little words you won't see on many sugar glider breeder websites.  There is a great deal of controversy regarding the potential for stress when shipping sugar gliders.  First and foremost, SunCoast Sugar Gliders would never engage in any practice that we believe is detrimental to the well being of our sugar gliders.  There is one right way and many wrong ways to ship a live animal.

We have extensively studied the differences in acclimation for sugar gliders that have traveled via air freight versus local automobile travel.  The facts are very clear and compelling - sugar gliders will experience an acclimation period no matter how they are transported to their new home.  It is our practice to stay in touch with our clients as often after a sugar glider purchase as before.  We care deeply about the experience for both glider and new family members, and want to ensure a smooth transition.

A newly acquired sugar glider is going to need time to get used to its new domain.  When you get a SunCoast Sugar Glider, the babies have never left the comfort of their nursery before.  Just like a new puppy being removed from its litter for the first time, the sugar glider is likely to be a bit afraid and tentative at first.  Give it time to settle in.  Let the sugar glider get used to its new cage before handling it a lot.  Bonding is built on trust.

The shipping process is quite simple.  We will only ship to major airports serviced by Continental Airlines.  Continental Airlines has a special live animal program (our authorization number is #001649900) and does an excellent job in the care and handling of our precious little pets.  The gliders will be flown in a special compartment that is climate controlled and pressurized just like the passenger cabins.  We must be able to get a flight that will take the babies counter to counter within our prescribed time frames for glider travel.  We've done the research, and know how to make it work for all parties concerned.

We will not travel the babies on overly long flights or flights that require several transfers.  Our time standards vary based upon weather and time of year.  In the summer, we are very restrictive about where we will send gliders and get them on very early A.M. flights so that they reach their final destination before the heat of the day has built up.

Our sugar gliders are checked by our veterinarian regularly and we will e-mail you a copy of our written guarantee promising their safe and healthy arrival prior to the shipping date.  Your glider is insured during shipment and guaranteed to arrive healthy.  We will give you specific details on exactly where in the airport you can pick up your sweet joeys.  Most airports will have a special pick up location for live animals; call the airport for directions.

We know you have read bad things about shipping gliders.  People have had problems because there is a right way and many wrong ways to do it.  If it is hard for you to believe the above and you can't understand how there could be a "right way" to ship a live animal, read this message from a customer who bought a sugar glider locally and had one shipped to her from SunCoast:

Lisa,

I had to write to tell you how much I appreciated you answering all my questions and concerns when I wanted to purchase a baby from you and have him shipped to Nashville.  I must admit at first I was a bit worried as I had read so much about not shipping a glider, as it was too stressful for them.  That is not the case.

My baby arrived and he was so happy tucked inside his little sleeping pouch, he seemed as though he didn't even realize he had been on a plane.  When I opened his shipping box he just looked at me closed his eyes and went right back to sleep!

He has instantly adjusted to his new home.  He ate a great dinner, played, and met his new mate.  He has adjusted much better than the glider baby I bought right here in Nashville.

Just goes to show if shipping is done right and with care, it does not harm the babies any more than a car ride home. And You definitely do it right!  Thanks Lisa for all the help you gave me, and the calls to make sure my baby arrived safely.

Frances
