Animal Nutrition Experts and USDA Vets
Hi folks. Arnold the glider here. Meet the Nutrition Experts and USDA Vets that provide advice to us on sugar glider care issues. Not only do they help the Lisa tree with me and my glider friends, but sometimes they write about sugar glider care for the GliderVet newsletter!
Dr. Dierenfeld received her PhD in animal nutrition from Cornell University and has an impressive track record in both the business and academic sides of animal nutrition. For example, while with the St. Louis Zoo, she assisted in planning construction of a new LEED certified (green) nutrition facility. As Dr. Dierenfeld’s background is SO impressive, we could go on and on here. Instead, we encourage you to review the credentials and experience in her LinkedIn bio here.
USDA Veterinarians
Hi folks, Arnold the sugar glider here. Our vets say that the best way to diagnose exotic animals like us is to see us in the habitat that our humans keep us in. Many problems that develop with exotic pets are caused by our humans not keeping us in the right environment or feeding us right. If you are confused by all the differing opinions you read on the web about this topic, please talk to a qualified vet.
If you live in Pinellas County, Florida, and would like our USDA vet to be your veterinarian, please send information about your pets, your pets needs and your phone number to [email protected]. And if you want to hear what these pros say about caring for sugar gliders, make sure to sign up for the GliderVet newsletter below!

Janine M. Cianciolo, DVM received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University – College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. While there, she was awarded the Kaytee Avian and Special Species Excellence Award, for demonstrated excellence in exotic medicine. Dr. C. dedicates her practice primarily to the care of exotics and wildlife. She certainly sees a number of cats and dogs in her practice, but is best known for her care of unusual animals, and authored many of our newsletter articles.
Dr. C.’s experiences and achievements are far reaching. While an undergraduate, Dr. C was a part-time dolphin trainer at King’s Island in Ohio. She completed her preceptorship at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium. Post- graduate work included a year long internship in exotic animal medicine with a well known Florida veterinarian, Dr. Theresa Lightfoot. Dr. C. participated in a Guatemalan project to return animals to their natural habitat after these animals were confiscated from illegal wildlife traders. Some of the animals rehabilitated were spider monkeys, howler monkeys, various types of parrots and macaws, jaguars, ocelots, margays, jaguarundis, kinkajous, Morlets crocodile, boas and iguanas. Several of these animals are on the endangered species list. She has even “gone glidin” with sugar gliders
