Sugar glider heat stress can happen faster than many owners expect. Gliders tolerate warmth better than cold, but a hot room, direct sun, a power outage or a closed car can push a small glider past its limits quickly. Knowing the signs of overheating and how to keep gliders cool can prevent an emergency.
At SunCoast Sugar Gliders we're based in Florida and have cared for gliders through hot, humid summers since 1999. Here's how to keep gliders comfortable when temperatures rise.
What Temperature Is Too Hot for Sugar Gliders?
Room temperatures in the mid-60s to mid-80s °F are commonly recommended for gliders. Many gliders sleep peacefully on warm days within that range. Problems become more likely as rooms climb above the upper 80s °F, especially with no air movement, direct sun or no water. Joeys, seniors and sick gliders are more vulnerable.
For cold-weather care, see keeping sugar gliders warm.
Signs of Overheating
- Restlessness or trying to get out of the pouch
- Lying stretched out flat instead of curled up
- Licking themselves heavily, leaving damp fur
- Open-mouth breathing or rapid breathing
- Weakness, wobbliness or lethargy
- Drooling
- Collapse or unresponsiveness (an emergency)
What to Do If Your Glider Is Overheating
- Move your glider to a cooler room right away, out of direct sun.
- Offer fresh water. Don't force it.
- Cool gradually. A fan in the room (not blowing directly on them) and a cool, not cold, surface can help. Don't use ice or cold water baths, which can shock a small body.
- Call your exotics vet immediately, even if your glider seems to recover. Heat stress can cause internal problems and dehydration. See dehydrated sugar glider.
How to Keep Sugar Gliders Cool
Watch cage placement
- Keep cages away from sunny windows, even in winter, as sun moves through the day
- Avoid placing cages near ovens, heaters or electronics that run hot
- Keep air circulating in the room
Plan for power outages
Air conditioning failures are a common cause of overheating. Have a plan: a cooler room in the house, battery-powered fans and a friend or family member who can check on your gliders.
Never leave gliders in a car
Car interiors heat up quickly, even with windows cracked. When traveling, keep gliders with you in a climate-controlled space. See traveling with sugar gliders.
Supervise outdoor time carefully
Sun and heat outdoors can overwhelm gliders quickly. Read our guide to whether sugar gliders can go outside.
Keep water fresh and full
Check water bottles and bowls daily, and add a second water source in hot weather.
Humidity and Heat
Gliders generally handle moderate humidity well. But hot, stuffy, still air is risky. Air movement and shade matter as much as the thermometer.
Common Hot-Weather Mistakes
- Placing the cage in a sunny window
- Relying on a fan blowing directly at the cage. It can dry gliders out and doesn't cool well in high heat
- Forgetting about power outages that shut off air conditioning
- Leaving gliders in a parked car, even briefly
- Overlooking water. Check bottles more often on hot days
Aim to keep the room in the mid-60s to mid-80s °F, and have a plan for very hot days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can sugar gliders live without air conditioning?
Many do in mild climates, as long as rooms stay comfortable. In hot climates, cooling is important.
Is a fan safe for sugar gliders?
A fan that moves room air is fine. Don't aim it directly at the cage, and keep cords out of reach.
Do gliders sweat?
Not the way we do. They may lick themselves to cool down, which is a sign they're too warm.
Should I put ice in my glider's cage?
Don't put ice directly in the cage. Instead, wrap a frozen water bottle in a towel and place it near, not inside, the cage so gliders can't chew on it. Cool the room first, and call an exotics vet if your glider shows signs of overheating.
Conclusion: Cool, Shaded and Hydrated
